The Bronze Woman is coming to Stockwell

On 27 January 2005, the Bronze Woman Monument Project signed a contract with bronze sculptor Ian Walters to create the Bronze Woman; a 7 foot statue of a woman holding a young child aloft that will be sited in Stockwell Memorial Gardens. The signing ceremony was culmination of 10 years work by Stockwell resident Cecile Nobrega who wrote the Bronze Woman poem almost 30 years ago.

Stockwell Partnership first met Cecile in 2001 when they had raised only £6,000 towards the total of £76,000. We have been assisting BWMP with its fundraising efforts since then and were delighted when the Stockwell Urban II programme granted the final £31,000 of required funding to enable the contract to be signed..

Ian Walters is a world renowned sculptor probably most famous for his bust of Nelson Mandela on the South Bank. He has also been commissioned to create the 9 foot bronze of Mr. Mandela in Trafalgar Square that is currently surrounded by controversy over its precise location.

BWMP has also received invaluable support from Presentation Housing Association who are providing project management and promotional support and acting as fundholder for the Urban II funds

"You were no different when you laid with Massa Boss
Free or forced you knew there was no loss
Of favours Ð Food,
Food for the black and hungry brood
Mulato-Eurasion Child-money
Subsidised economy
Guaranteed a step away from want and need
.A step away from toil and sweat Ð the heat of day"
Bronze Woman Excerpt by Cecile Nobrega
